Legal Aid ACT follows all relevant laws when handling personal information.
Members of the public can seek access to documents held by Legal Aid ACT, or to change the personal information that we hold, by making a request under ACT freedom of information laws.
Legal Aid ACT will make your files available to you to inspect on an informal request, or under the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act. If you want access to your file or copies of documents you can come to our Civic office in person together with personal identification, or you can write to us with your request.
You will not be able to access information which is considered exempt under the FOI Act.
Legal Aid ACT handles all personal information in accordance with ACT privacy laws.
The privacy of information given to us concerning your affairs is protected by section 92 of the Legal Aid Act 1977 (the Act). The information will not be disclosed to third parties unless you consent to disclosure, or disclosure is permitted by the act. Informatino is shared between the staff of Legal Aid ACT, and with your lawyer, to the extent necessary to make properly informed decisions about the provision of legal assistance. For example, we may need to ask your lawyer for information relevant to your eligibility for legal assistance.
